Psychological & Neurodevelopmental Assessments In Shepparton & Geelong

Watching a child work hard at school and still struggle with reading or attention can leave you looking for a clearer explanation. Adults may have a similar question when organising everyday tasks takes far more effort than other people realise. Repeatedly explaining the difficulty can be tiring. An assessment starts with what you most want to understand and considers strengths alongside support needs, so the findings can guide practical decisions.

Registered psychologist and teacher Collette Caffrey offers psychological and neurodevelopmental assessments for children, adolescents and adults. Collette considers developmental history, everyday functioning and the question you hope to answer. When school is part of the picture, teaching experience helps make recommendations relevant to home and school. Appointments are available in Shepparton and Belmont, Geelong.

What A Psychological Assessment Can Help Clarify

An assessment brings together interviews, relevant records and standardised measures to clarify strengths and support needs. Findings may inform educational supports, treatment planning and an understanding of everyday functioning. Where appropriate, they may assist with diagnostic clarification. A report can inform a funding application; the relevant agency makes the funding decision.

Assessment Questions For Children & Adults

Parents may ask why a child is finding reading, classroom work or friendships difficult. Adults may enquire about attention, memory or managing daily tasks. A GP, paediatrician, school or funding body may also have a specific question. Tell us what you need the assessment to address when you enquire.

Types Of Psychological & Neurodevelopmental Assessments

Depending on the referral question, the assessment may focus on:

  • Cognitive and intellectual ability

  • Educational achievement and learning needs

  • Autism

  • ADHD

  • Functional capacity and adaptive functioning

  • Memory and other areas of cognitive functioning

  • Emotional, behavioural and mental health concerns

We’ll select relevant tools after the intake, when the purpose of the assessment is clear.

Choosing The Right Assessment

We’ll look at the referral question, age, history and information already available before planning the assessment. Previous reports, school information and medical records can help avoid repeating work or overlooking useful context.

What To Expect During The Assessment Process

01.

Intake & Assessment Planning

We’ll ask about developmental, medical and personal history, current concerns, strengths and any relevant injuries or medications. Collette develops a formulation with you and explains the assessment plan, including which appointments and supporting information may be needed.

02.

Consent & Relevant Records

Before formal assessment appointments are confirmed, we’ll ask for your consent, any referral relevant to your pathway, and medical, developmental, school or allied health reports you already have. We’ll explain which documents would help answer the assessment question.

03.

Interviews, Measures & Supporting Information

The assessment may include interviews, standardised measures, observation and questionnaires. With consent, we may consider information from family, schools, GPs, paediatricians or allied health professionals. The number of appointments and timeframe depend on the question and the information needed.

04.

Feedback, Written Report & Recommendations

At the end, you’ll receive a feedback appointment and written report setting out the findings, strengths, support needs and practical recommendations. Diagnostic conclusions are included where appropriate. With your consent, a tailored letter or report may be shared with a nominated professional, school or funding agency.
